2019-2024 Sierra/Silverado: Brake Fluid Flush/Exchange
Time: 45 min - 1 hr
Difficulty: easy to moderate
Cost: $20-40
Why a Brake Fluid Exchange Is Important
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which can lower its boiling point and reduce braking efficiency. Contaminated brake fluid can also corrode brake system components, leading to expensive repairs and unsafe driving conditions. Regularly exchanging brake fluid ensures optimal braking performance and prolongs the lifespan of your braking system.
Tools You'll Need
DOT4 Brake Fluid: 1.05qts total system capacity
7/16 Wrench: For loosening bleeder screw
Brake Bleeder Kit (optional): You can do this service with a pressure bleed kit or a vacuum resevoir. The pressure kit keeps fluid level up as you bleed fluid out. With a vacuum bleeder, you'll need to add fluid as it's extracted.
Jack and Jack Stands: To access the brake bleeder screws.
Shop Towels: To clean up spills.
Gloves: Gloves and safety glasses.
How to Do It - Manual Method
Preparation: Park on a flat surface and ensure the engine is off.
Locate the brake fluid reservoir and check the fluid level.
Remove Old Fluid: Use a turkey baster to remove as much old fluid as possible from the reservoir.
Refill with fresh brake fluid to the recommended level.
Bleed the Brakes: Lift the vehicle and remove the wheels for easy access to the bleeder screws.
Starting with the wheel farthest from the master cylinder (usually rear passenger), attach the bleeder kit to the screw.
Have a helper press the brake pedal while you open the bleeder screw to let old fluid out. Close the screw before the pedal is released to prevent air from entering the system.
Repeat the process until fresh fluid flows, and move to the next wheel (rear driver, front passenger, front driver).
Top Off and Clean Up: Refill the reservoir to the proper level and check for leaks.
Dispose of old fluid responsibly at a recycling center.
Test the Brakes: Pump the brake pedal to ensure firm pressure before driving.
Watch the video below to see the process on a 2019-2025 GM pickup using a vacuum extractor to speed up the process. The process is the same for any 2019-2025 GMC/Chevrolet Sierra, Yukon, Escalade, Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban
